Insurance Success

I realize it's been a while since my last post, so I'd like to provide an update on a couple of items.

1. After a long haul, I finally got my insurance company to cover the cost of the glucose sensors. I still have to manually submit all my claims from Minimed to Humana. I'm just happy they now cover the 80% of the cost. If anyone wants to know the specific steps I had to take, leave a post and I can elaborate

2. I love the CGMS. However, I have been having some problems with the tape products that I apply over the sensor (to keep it water-tight, and stable). I currently use the IV3000 product that is recommended by minimed. However, as you can imagine, trying to apply this IV tape over the battery / transmitter causes problems. I frequently have problems with folds occurring, which then does not make a solid adhesive with my skin. Then, after water gets into these folds, the entire tape begins to lift up.

I've requested a "tape kit" from minimed and am looking into other tapes to apply. If anyone has some other good experiences, please let us know.

Hi, my name is Michelle and I live in MA. Recently got the Continuous Glucose Monitor approved by insurance and like you, I had an initial problem with taping. I too, requested the "tape kit" from minimed but nothing included was large enough. I presently use 3M, 4X4.5cm tapes to hold in place. You must know that I first use the skin prep wipes to make the tape adhere better. I know the company tells you NOT to use that, not sure why. I first use the IV 3000 tape, then cover that with the 3M tape. Never another problem since then. You can purchase them at CVS, or actually order from minimed.
Good luck
Michelle

I am very thankful to have stumbled onto your web site. I have been Type 1 for 45 years (since the age of 5) and have obviously seen many many changes over that time in terms of treatment options. I have recently received the 722 pump and am very excited at all I am reading as to how the pump will help me get my life back. Recently, my diabetes has been controlling me, and not the other way around. I go "live" on the pump next week . . . I really look forward to the day wheh the CGM is an option for me . . . just now entering the insurance marathon. Thank you for your honesty and your encouragement. Again, I am thankful to you for creating and maintaining this site. What a blessing.

I got started on a Paradigm 722 pump in July (Type 1 for 24 years) and shortly thereafter got the denial letter from my insurance company (CIGNA) for the CGMS. A few weeks later, I went to an "advanced pumping" class taught by a medtronic rep. She said that CIGNA has JUST (that week) sent out a statement that they were going to start covering the CGMS. She said that she would re-submit my request, and continue to do so until it got approved. She did, and within another month or so, I was approved. My suggestion is to talk to a medtronic rep and see if you can get them to do the work for you. GOOD LUCK!

How odd. I never have trouble with the IV3000 tape. Not to insult your intelligence, but you do realize there are three layers to the IV3000 tape, right. One is obvious, where you pull off the tabs just like a bandaid. Then, the crinkly part. You just need to push it down firmly around the edge again and again. Then, you pull that part off and it leaves a thin film. I always get a tight seal. Oh, the other thing I do is put a small bandaid over the back flat part of the sensor insertion part. That goes under the IV3000, and it holds the needle in quite nicely. Good luck!

hey dear,
I am very interested in the CGMS, because my glucose is not under control and a lot of time I don't have time to check it. So sad that I missed a lot, could you please comment more on the CGMS, is it really helping you control your glucose? Do you wear it all day long? I am considering only wear it when I was put on big projects that I would normally be overwhelmed to check my glucose, is that feasible? Sorry for so many questions, last one, does the insurance plan covers the sensor? Thanks a lot! Wish both of us keep our glucose under control.

Have you tried using skin prep or mastisol before applying adhesive

Get bi occlusive dressings. They are a good bit larger and the more surface area allows them to seal more effectively. Also, make sure your skin is neither stretched nor bulging while you apply the dressing.
