Success, after 24 months.

Insurance Update

As you've all been reading for over 2 years, my struggle with getting insurance to cover the CGMS sensors has been a long journey.

For the past 2 years Every time I order sensors, I have to pay for them with a credit card, and then submit to Humana manually.

Well, that has now changed. Much to my surprise, my last order was processed directly from Minimed to Humana, and is now covered at 80%. Every time in the past, my order would be declined. This is a huge step forward! No credit card, no manual claim submission.

Matt, good to hear from you again, please leave your email address so we can talk.

Thanks for your blog. I'm trying to get my Mom an Abbot Navigator CGMS system and she's on Humana. Good to hear they'll cover medtronic.

Your blog was very helpful. I am a Type I diabetic (since 1998) and struggling to get my insurance to cover CGMS. I am pregnant and for whatever reason struggling much more with this preganancy than my first (doesn't help to have to tend to a toddler :-) ). Anyone know of cheaper options outside the U.S. like Canada?

I have been an insulin dependent diabetic for 20+ and was diagnosed in 1973. Yeah back when testing was of the urine which has now being discovered to be 12 hours behind the time. I have a private insurance through my husbsand's work and Medicare. I was taken off an insulin pump last year when I crashed my car into a tree and blood sugar was 30. While still in hospital for x-ray's my blood sugar dropped to 56. The doctors where I live are going to do the continuous monitering for 3 days and see if they can get my blood sugars better regulated on Novolog and Lantus. High in AM and drop in afternoons. Try to check at least 4 times a day and found this site this afternoon. Good luck.

I have been on the Medtronic insulin pump for 4 mos. and considering a CGMS.
I would appreciate comments from users.
Does anyone know if Humana Rx D will pay for 80% of the supplies?

If this helps at all, get a DEXCOM! Sensors last a really long time (cheaper too) and the readings are far more accurate.

Insertion does take a little more time, but it's worth it. My Mom has the HealthPartners Freedom III "cost plan" and everything was covered at 80%. If you have a regular Medicare supplement, you will not get coverage for any CGM because they are not covered by Medicare. A cost plan takes over managing Part B expenses and sometimes kicks-in more coverage for things that Medicare excludes. If you call Dexcom, they can tell you who else covers and will work directly with your insurer to get coverage. The DEXCOM beats Medtronic's device hands-down. I would highly recommend it as a real life-saver if you have hypoglycemic unawareness.

For the record, Humana coverage is just lousy. Everybody has problems with them. As far as I know, any plan from BCBS will not cover CGM's either.

I appreciate this site. I have been looking for a site where I could log my blood sugars & then print out for my doctor visits. You Logs have exactly what I need, so thank you very much!
I do have one problem & maybe it is my printer. When I print a report the report starts half way down the page. Is there anyway to fix that? Thanks again for hosting this site.
